Karen has specialized in fire prevention for 25+ years. Karen
graduated from Murray State University, Kentucky with a Masters of
Science Degree in Occupational Safety and Health and a Certificate of
Specialization in Industrial Hygiene. Since then she achieved
International Building Code Association (ICBO) certification in the
Uniform Fire Code in 1986 and Certified Plan Examiner in 1991 and is
current in both.
Her career began, as a Deputy State Fire Marshal working in and around the Indianapolis Indiana, metropolitan area. She also served as the State Fire Marshal staff representative for review of formal request for Alternative Materials and Methods and Waivers, and as liaison on the state committee reviewing Board and Care Facility legislation and regulation. When the State Fire Marshal's office merged into the Department of Fire and Building Services, Karen moved into the position of Fire and Life Safety Specialist responsible for state fire code development. Karen entered the Warren Township Volunteer Fire Department, Fire Fighter Academy, passed and received 1st Class Firefighter Certification.
Karen moved to California and served as staff engineer, Fire and Life Safety Specialist, for the International Conference of Building Officials. She later worked for Rolf Jensen and Associates where she participated in a variety of projects.
Karen has served as fire department plan examiner for El Segundo Fire Department and Orange County Fire Authority. During her 9 years with Orange County Fire Authority Karen worked throughout the county, but primarily in the Irvine area. Karen has been responsible for annual and new construction inspections and plan examination of high-rise buildings, flammable liquid storage, large assembly buildings, atrium structures and other facilities. Responsibilities included UFC & California Building Code fire and life safety provisions, fire sprinkler and fire alarm system verification, high-piled storage, and hazardous material storage/use.
